About Us

This exhibition was put together by a group of 300 level University of Otago classics students for the paper CLAS344 From Augustus to Nero: Scandal and Intrigue in Imperial Rome; intended to bring public awareness to Roman coinage and the meaning behind it.

This project focuses on buildings and their representation on coins of the Roman empire. As a group we studied these coins, as well as a variety of ancient and modern literature, in an effort to provide understanding as to why these coins and buildings were presented in the way they were.

We chose the topic of buildings on coins because the idea of construction is an important one in Roman history, and we all decided it was an area we had interest in writing about. Our exhibition focuses on four coins from the imperial period in Rome, with a special focus on how they represented political agenda and propaganda.

The coins used in this project are currently kept in the Otago Museum, Dunedin.
